MADURAI: A nano facility to develop low-cost medicines for critical health disorders is coming up at the Bharathiar University in Coimbatore with the support of State Government and Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO). The State Government has already sanctioned Rs.1 crore for the project and more funds are being sought to expedite it. G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of the university, told The Hindu here on Thursday that a meeting would be conducted next month in the presence of Chief Minister to work out the modalities for the centre. The Arkansas University in the US would also support the proposed facility and its experts would visit the varsity shortly. According to Dr. Thiruvasagam, the objective of the centre is to undertake research in nano sciences for formulating cheaper drugs for heart ailments, Parkinson's disease etc. Members of the State Planning Commission and officials of the Higher Education Department would attend the meeting in which the varsity authorities would make a presentation about the project. He said the university was keen to get the project going by September. The varsity was right now constructing a huge building for Centre for Life Sciences on the campus, which would be inaugurated in a couple of months.
