Sarvodaya Karnataka is in revival mode

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Sarvodaya Karnataka, a conglomeration of progressive forces and pro-people movements including Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Dalita Sangharsha Samithi, is all set to re-invent itself to meet the challenges of the changed political scenario.

At a press conference here on Thursday, the party's executive president K.S. Puttannaiah said that the list of heads of its units in Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu and Mandya districts would be announced on July 2.

Office-bearers of Gadag, Bijapur and Kopla districts would be announced on August 2. It would be followed by announcement of office-bearers of Bangalore, Tumkur and Kolar, he added.

The failure of the Karnataka Development Front Government in addressing the problems being faced by the people and rise in farmer suicides had forced the party to revive its activities, he said.

`Publicity stunt'

"Chief Minister's stay in villages has not helped in solving problems. He is doing it just for publicity. He has failed in keeping promises made to the people," he said.

He lambastied the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda for his "meaningful silence" over the spate in suicide of farmers.

Mr. Puttannaiah alleged that Mr. Gowda who was visiting the families of farmers who had committed suicides before Janata Dal (Secular) had come to power was silent now.

Mr. Deve Gowda was not speaking on the plight of sugarcane and tobacco growers, he said. Mr. Puttannaiah said that he and the party'ts honorary president Devanuru Mahadeva had requested all progressive forces, Left parties and intellectuals to join their party to uphold the values of democracy.

On the Ullal byelection, Mr. Puttannaiah said that Sarvodaya Karnataka would request the electorate to opt for secular forces.
