Cuttack: A vacation judge of Orissa High Court on Wednesday created a record by presiding over the court for more than 13 hours and disposing of as many as 500 cases on a single day. Justice Pradeep Kumar Mohanty held the court from 8 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. with only about half-an-hour lunch break. According to official sources, at least 732 cases were listed for the day as the High Court was closed for the summer vacation on May 18. All the urgent civil, criminal and Company Act matters, which cannot wait till the reopening of the court, are listed for the vacation court to be disposed of during vacation. The High Court is closed for summer vacation for one month from May 18 to June 17. During this period, it was decided by the Chief Justice that the vacation court would sit for only four days to be presided over by six judges. While Justice Mohanty held the court on Wednesday, Justice P.K. Tripathy will hold the court on May 30, Justice Laxmikanta Mohapatra and Justice Sanju Panda on June 6 and Justice A.S. Naidu and Justice Indrajit Mohanty on June 12. The Chief Justice has also directed that any matter pertaining to administrative business of the State government, the senior most judges available at the headquarters will deal with the urgent administrative matters during the vacation. According to reliable sources, the High Court is planning to hold either morning or evening courts during the summer vacation.
