CHENNAI: A New Delhi-based company on Thursday announced its proposal to enter the perishable commodities market of Tamil Nadu. Describing the project as a farmer-friendly initiative, the company Premium Farm Fresh Produce Limited said it proposes to establish terminal markets in the state. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, its chief operating officer J.S. Yadav said there would be three facilities, one each at Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore, where the produce procured from farmers would be sold to different stakeholders - wholesale traders, supermarkets to exporters and processors.
Awaiting approval
The terminal markets project, for which the company is awaiting the approval of the State Government, would be supported by 100 collection centres to procure perishables such as fruits, vegetables, fish and meat from about 30,000 farmers across the state. Mr. Yadav said the price of the produce would be decided through electronic auctioning. "We will function as an intermediary between the farmers and the potential buyers," said Mr. Yadav.
Collection centres
Cash payment would be made on the spot at the collection centres to the farmers. He added that the company would invest about Rs.300 on the project in the state. "Our first terminal market in the country at Nasik is at design stage and will become operational in a month," said Mr. Yadav.
