MADURAI: As part of the enhanced security measures in the central prison here, where members of banned organisations have been lodged, the city police and jail authorities on Thursday decided to launch joint patrolling and surveillance. Security guards on watchtowers will be given night vision binoculars.

At a high-level meeting convened by the Additional Director General of Police and Commissioner, A. Subramanian, important decisions were taken on how a foolproof security system could be put in place.

As a first step towards strengthening external security, a company of the Tamil Nadu Special Police was deployed for round-the-clock patrolling. A Quick Reaction Team trained to counter emergency situations was stationed.

Frisking operations

In order to check the entry of unauthorised persons and also prevent prohibited materials from being taken into the prison, a team of the city police will assist the jail staff in frisking operations. Apart from the existing watchtowers, six more will be established along the outer perimeter.

"We have decided to provide wireless communication, night vision binoculars and metal detectors for enhancing prison security," Mr. Subramanian said.

Besides activists of Muslim fundamentalist organisations, six cadres of the LTTE have also been lodged in high security blocks. The prison has an average of 2,000 inmates, including life convicts, lodged all through the year, jail sources said.

The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (Madurai Range), B.M. Ezra, the Deputy Commissioners of Police, R. Ramarajan (Law and Order), V.H. Mohammed Haneefa (Crime and Traffic) and intelligence officials took part in the meeting.
