Eviction drive begins in city

Thiruvananthapuram: Close on the heels of the eviction drive in various parts of the State, the district administration swung into action on Thursday to reclaim 16 cents of land encroached by a construction firm at Sasthamangalam.

Officials said the firm, which was going ahead with the construction of an apartment complex, encroached upon the adjacent land and constructed compound wall. The authorities served notice on Wednesday to remove the encroachments within 24 hours.

A squad led by the district revenue officials demolished the compound wall on Thursday. District Collector N. Ayyappan and other revenue officials visited the site.

Meanwhile, revenue officials carried out a survey near Theerthapada mandapam at East Fort to find out the extent of encroachments.

Officials said eight cents had been encroached upon in the area and several shops set up. They said the survey of nearby roads would commence soon.

The administration had already served notices on several shops, resorts and hotels at Poovar, Chowara and Muloor among other places in the district.
