`Gram vastavya' a political gimmick, says CPI(M)

Staff Correspondent

Plea to scarp unit system of supplying foodgrains through PDS

Bidar: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has criticised Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy 's "Gram Vastavya" programme.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, party's State executive committee member Neela K. called upon Mr. Kumaraswamy to "stop indulging in such political gimmicks."

`Find solutions'

He should instead focus on finding long-term solutions to the problems of the poor, she said.

She felt that the programme had turned into a countryside jaunt for the Chief Minister and officials at the cost of the taxpayers' money.

She demanded that the Government scrap the newly introduced unit system of distributing foodgrains through the Public Distribution System and revert to the fixed quota system.

Earlier, each family got a fixed quota of grains irrespective of the number of members in the family.

Now, however, a poor family only gets a maximum of 20 kg of foodgrains. Each person is considered a unit who is eligible for four kg of foodgrains a month. This system is anti-poor and is bound to disturb the food security of the country, she said.

She said that the Government should issue at least one crore BPL cards and that jowar be distributed through fair price shops.

Criticised

She criticised Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa for granting of Rs 2 crore to the Sri Ramachandrapur Math in Shimoga. "Mr. Yediyurappa has given away Rs 200 crore to maths and other religious institutions. Why cannot the Government give that money to families of farmers who committed suicide and the poorest of the poor?" she asked.
