BANGALORE: The legal team representing the State in the Supreme Court on the Cauvery water dispute, apart from the Krishna water dispute before the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal, is on a three-day visit to Bangalore to gather information from the departments concerned. Headed by eminent jurist Fali S. Nariman, who represented the state before the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, the team held a series of meetings with officials of the Water Resources and Law departments over the past two days. The team has been eliciting views from the officials to effectively argue the State's case before the Supreme Court on the special leave petition filed by the Government challenging the tribunal award. Water Resources Minister K.S. Eshwarappa met the team on Saturday. The team will hold consultations with senior government officials on Sunday too. The team comprises Sharad Jawali, Mohan V. Kataraki, Brijesh Kalappa and Shambu Prasad Singh, besides Mr. Nariman. After the meeting, Mr. Eshwarappa told presspersons that the team was confident of securing justice in the dispute with Tamil Nadu. "Having done gross injustice to the State after the prolonged 17-year proceedings, the tribunal even ignored the drinking water requirements of State capital," the Minister said. "I am confident of the Supreme Court doing justice to the State in the dispute. Though the tribunal has done injustice to us, we will not accept it as the Government's failure. We will highlight loopholes in the award and convince the apex court about the injustice." The tribunal in its final award on February 5 allocated 419 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu, 270 tmcft to Karnataka, 30 tmcft to Kerala and 7 tmcft to Puducherry in a "normal" year. The SLPs challenging the award by the three States, excluding Puducherry, were admitted by the apex court on May 7.
