Monsoon may set in over Kerala shortly

It may set in over Kerala on or before May 29: IMD

NEW DELHI: The southwest monsoon can set in over Kerala on or before May 29, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Speaking to The Hindu, a senior IMD official confirmed that even on Friday there were no signals when the monsoon would set in.

But, over the past 24 hours there were some rapid developments in the Arabian sea and the conditions were becoming favourable for the onset during the next three or four days.

Change in wind flow

The wind, which had been flowing in the northwesterly direction, was beginning to move in the southwesterly direction.

In addition, the cross-equatorial wind flow was getting stronger and an offshore trough appeared along the Kerala-Karnataka coast, making conditions favourable.

``It is a very tricky business to forecast the setting in of the monsoon. For days together, there may not be any sign. Suddenly, the signs could come up and develop rapidly as has happened now. One has to always remember that monsoon is a global scale system and exhibited sporadic variations,'' the official said.
