Naresh Trehan
NEW DELHI: Ousted cardiologist Naresh Trehan has been reinstated as the executive director of the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre Limited (EHIRCL) following orders issued by the hospital management on Saturday morning. According to Dr. Trehan, an out of court settlement was reached between him and the managing director of EHIRCL and Fortis Healthcare Limited Shivinder Mohan Singh in the wee hours of Saturday. A press statement issued by the hospital management said the "misunderstandings have now been resolved" and "Dr. Trehan continues as the executive director of EHIRCL." It added that the situation at Escorts was the "result of a misunderstanding, allegations and accusations and that it is now regretted by all. These allegations stand completely and unconditionally withdrawn." The breakthrough comes after a weeklong stand off between the noted cardiologist and the Fortis Healthcare management, which on May 18 directed Dr. Trehan to "relinquish the post of executive director of the Institute to concentrate on his Medicity Business Venture." Mr. Singh said: "Friends on both sides intervened and we placed our differences on the table for discussion. This is the first step forward and though we haven't drawn up a written agreement Dr. Trehan will stay as the executive director." However, Mr. Singh clarified that he "can't guarantee about how long any doctor will stay with us" but maintained that the "administrative changes that were introduced will stay." Dr. Trehan said that while a broad-based agreement had been reached now the two sides would enter into long-term talks. "Director of the Anaesthesia and Critical Care Yatin Mehta has also been reinstated."
