Chennai: The main draw of the Smt. Krishna Khaitan memorial all-India junior badminton tournament will commence at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on May 28. The qualifying rounds are on, and the final will be held on May 31. "The Indian team for the Asian junior badminton championships to be held at Kuala Lumpur in July will be selected during this tournament. Six boys and four girls will be selected for the under-19 category," said Sanjiv Sachdeva, organising secretary, at a press conference. Conducted by the Express Shuttle Club for the 17th year, the prize money for the tournament will be sponsored by Cadbury India Ltd. (Rs. 2 lakhs for various winners, runners-up, semifinalists and quarterfinalists). Yonex-Sunrise will provide the equipment. Arun Nandaluri of Air-India will be seeded top in the boys' under-19 singles event, while Arundati Pantawane of Maharashtra will be the top seed in the girls' under-19 category. The other categories, besides the under-19 boys' and girls' singles and doubles, include the under-16 and under-13 boys' and girls' singles and doubles events, mixed doubles, and the boys' and girls' under-10 singles events. Around 422 qualifying matches took place on Saturday, out of a total of 913 qualifying matches that will conclude on Monday morning. The tournament received a total of 1,245 entries this year.
