Free HIV camp

Bangalore: This "Global Week of Action", concerned individuals, especially those working in the health sector, tried to raise awareness about the need for better treatment facilities for people with HIV/AIDS. The ESI Hospital, Indiranagar, also did its bit to talk about maternal and child care in the area of HIV/AIDS. It has been organising a free HIV check-up camp all this week, which will continue till May 27.

An education and awareness programme on issues concerning people living with HIV and their health was also organised by the hospital recently.

New DC takes charge

Kolar: G. Ramachandra, Additional Secretary in the Women and Child Welfare Department, has been appointed Deputy Commissioner of Kolar district. His appointment followed the promotion of Anjum Parvez to the post of Joint Managing Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation. Mr. Ramachandra took charge from the Deputy Commissioner in-charge and zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ritvik Ranjan Pande. The Deputy Commissioner's headquarters' assistant Babanna was present.

Rain in Kolar

Kolar: Heavy rain lashed Kolar city on Saturday evening. It brought much-needed relief to the citizens from the extreme heat of the summer. But people on two-wheelers faced problems as the roads got flooded due to the lack of proper drainage. Two-wheeler riders could be seen taking shelter under the roofs of shops till the rains receded. — Staff Correspondent

`PDS being diluted'

Kolar: The successive governments have diluted the Public Distribution System (PDS) under pressure from American imperialism, which is causing poor people hardship, All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) State committee leader Gowramma has said. She was inaugurating the taluk-level conference of the Janawadi Mahila Samithi (JMS) here on Saturday.

She lamented that although there were many laws protecting women, these had been rendered useless owing to the lack of political will and a men-centred social system. The chief guest S. Muniraju, a lecturer, called upon women to develop awareness against injustice. — Staff Correspondent

Nomination withdrawn

BELGAUM: The State Government, reportedly under the pressure from Kannada organisations here, retracted its decision to nominate Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) activist Krishna Hundre as member of the Belgaum Agriculture Market Produce Committee on Friday. Mr. Hundre was nominated to the APMC on Thursday. Election to the post of president and vice-president of the body is scheduled on May 28. The Kannada Rakshana Vedike had strongly objected the nomination of MES activist to the APMC Board and demanded his withdrawal. — Staff Correspondent

Action against bars

PANAJI: The State Excise Department has initiated action against 30 bars across the State for violating norms prescribed by the excise authorities based on directives of the Election Commission (EC). The EC has been strictly monitoring alleged misuse of liquor in the State in view of Assembly elections scheduled for June 2.

PANAJI: Non-governmental organisations and citizens' groups across the State have condemned the action of sub-divisional magistrate, Margao in South Goa on Thursday of preventing a talk on "Communal threat to secular democracy in India" by Ram Puniyani scheduled in Kare Law College auditorium apprehending disturbance of peace. The talk was organised by a local NGO Citizens Initiatives on Communal Harmony in association with the Law College. The convenors of programme Ramesh Gavas and Albertina Almeida told The Hindu on Friday that this was a serious case of violation of the freedom of expression. — Special Correspondent

HUBLI: The Hubli Police have arrested a person on charges of illegally transporting spirit allegedly for manufacturing illicit liquor and seized spirit worth Rs. 20,000. In a release, the police have given the name of the arrested as Hanumantaraya B. Sadavarti of Aralikatti Oni in Hubli. — Staff Correspondent

Elected unopposed

DAVANGERE: Shivamurthy of Kodaganur was elected unopposed president of the Davangere Taluk Panchayat here on Saturday. The post fell vacant following the resignation of Basavaraj Naika, who resigned after completing 20 months in office. Earlier, Shymanur Shivashankarappa, MLA, sent a one-line instruction to all Congress members to support Shivamurthy. Accordingly, only Shivamurthy had filed the nomination. — Staff Correspondent

Vaccination drive

BIJAPUR: The authorities will take up a mass DEC vaccination drive in the district following the increasing cases of elephantiasis. The decision was taken at a review meeting of the Health Department here on Thursday after district malaria officer S.L. Lakkannavar said that 627 cases of elephantiasis had been reported in the district. — Staff Correspondent

Bidar: Canara Bank will organise its centenary celebrations in Bidar on Sunday. Staff and customers will participate in a procession in the morning. A new scheme to offer increased interest rates to savings deposits will be launched. Trimester system to continue for now

Bangalore: The trimester system, now in vogue in government and unaided schools in the State, will continue in the coming academic year as well. There was a demand from a section of parents and teachers to revert to the semester system.

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj S. Horatti said the Government had not been able to arrive at a decision though there had been many rounds of discussions. The existing trimester system would have to continue into the next academic year "since there is little time left now" for further discussions, with the beginning of the academic year only a week away. The trimester system was introduced in 2004 in a bid to make learning less burdensome since it divides the academic year into three units of three months each. But some teachers said it had increased the burden on them because there were three exams in one year.

Army recruitment rally in Tumkur

Bangalore: The Army will hold a recruitment rally at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium, Tumkur, from June 4 to 7. The rally will be held to select candidates for the post of soldier technical, soldier clerk/storekeeper technical, soldier general duty and soldier dispensation category. Candidates from Bangalore, Bangalore Rural, Tumkur, Mysore, Kolar, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts can attend the rally. They should have a minimum qualification of 10+2/Intermediate with 50 per cent marks. They should report with original certificates and 15 passport-size photographs. — Staff Reporter

CoD begins investigation

Belgaum: The Corps of Detectives (CoD) has taken up the investigation of the death of Raju Amar Uchagaonkar, 35. The family members of the victim suspected foul play as Raju allegedly died in police custody.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police S.K. Hegde, CoD Deputy Superintendent of Police G.R. Desai and an Inspector arrived here on Friday to begin the investigation. — Staff Correspondent

Convention on panchayats

Bangalore: The Institute of Social Sciences will conduct a one-day State-level convention on Sunday to discuss the emerging situation in the State with regard to devaluation and marginalisation of panchayats. Zilla panchayat presidents and members of taluk and gram panchayats will participate in the convention.

According to a press release, the convention will adopt a charter of demands to be submitted to the State Government. The convention will be held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan beginning 10 a.m. — Staff Reporter

Assurance on training hailed

Bidar: The Karnataka Rajya Angavikalara Hitarakshana Samiti has hailed Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's assurance that the Government will provide computer training to people with disabilities. It has also welcomed the Government's decision to increase the loan sanctioned to such people under the Adhara scheme to Rs. 35,000 from Rs. 12, 000. It has also welcomed the decision to issue free bus passes and increase the monthly pension to Rs. 400. "Our feelings were communicated to the Chief Minister during his recent visit to the district," samiti president Santosh Dhanake said. — Staff Correspondent
