Bitterness with Centre will end: Mayawati

`Politics will not come in the way of development'

SEEKING HELP: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati at a meeting in New Delhi on Saturday.

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh had suffered immensely due to the "confrontationist attitude" of the previous Mulayam Singh Government for "political and personal" reasons.

Stating so in her first meeting — after taking charge of the State — with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday, Chief Minister Mayawati said, "For the last three years, development works in Uttar Pradesh were at a standstill because of the bitter relations it had with the Centre. This resulted in huge losses to the State during the last regime and created hurdles in resource generation."

Hoping her election would end the bitterness between the Centre and the State, she said Dr. Singh assured her full cooperation with her government and promised all assistance to the State.

The Chief Minister said she apprised the Prime Minister of the situation in the State and promised that politics would not be allowed to come in the way of development. She sought funds for balanced growth and overall development including in key infrastructural areas such as power, roads, tourism and development of an international airport.

Speedy approval sought

Ms. Mayawati said she also sought assistance for the development of an international airport at Jewar near Aligarh, inclusion of the State in the national Buddhist circuit, assistance for coal-based power plants, and speedy approvals to pending projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru Renewal Mission.

Ms. Mayawati will leave for Lucknow on Sunday after calling on the Chief Election Commissioner.
