Blood donation: trickle turns into a flow

Staff Reporter

Voluntary donors on website increase to 15,000

HYDERABAD: What began as a modest effort to tackle the chronic problem of blood supply shortage in hospitals by harnessing technology, has now become a movement of sorts. When it started, friends2support.org had just 200 voluntary blood donors, now after two years, it has 15,000 members.

Another heart-warming aspect with this website is the efforts of youngsters, which fuel its success. While the conceptual part of the website was done by five young IT professionals, even the majority of registered members are from GenNext. A programme was organised on Saturday in Hyderabad to celebrate the success of the website and to formally launch the website www.friends2support.org by Transport Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana.

Accessing database

"Anyone from any part of the country can log onto this website or call toll-free helpline number for a list of blood donors in their particular area. The website essentially is a database of blood donors in all the districts of any Indian State and people can access this database in a jiffy," says Sk. K. Shareef, one of the founder-members of the website.

Initially, the website was collecting data of blood donors only from the State.

However, from now on it is now applicable in all parts of the country.

"Interested persons have to register themselves by giving their blood group, contact numbers and address. Presently, there are 15,000 donors registered with this website," informed Mr. Shareef.

Persons wanting to contact the registered blood donors can contact: Helpline numbers: 0863-2351725 or 1051 or log onto `www.friends2support .com'.
