VIJAYAWADA: A rich fare of rural sports and games will unfold at the NTR Stadium in Gudivada on May 30 and 31 as part of the rural sports and games meet being organised by the Consortium of Indian Farmers' Associations (CIFA) and Thumps Up. Sportspersons, both men and women of above 18 years of age, from rural areas will take part in a number of events. Meet's convenor P.S.R. Das said on Sunday that competitions would be held for men in kabaddi, volleyball, relay sack-carrying race and bicycle race. Winners of the events would take part in the State meet to be held at Karamchedu (Prakasam district) in the last week of June. For women, competitions would be held only at the district level in such events as lemon and spoon race, running races and musical chair.
Health camps
"For all outstation participants, travelling allowance and free boarding and lodging will be provided. Certificates will be given to all the participants," Mr. Das said. The district Health Department and the Indian Red Cross Society would organise a free dental and eye camp on the sidelines of the event in which doctors would conduct free tests and suggest proper medical care. Mr. Das said that the objective of the sports meet was to rejuvenate rural cultural ethos among the rural folk.
Photo contest
The organising committee would also be holding a photo contest titled `Thumps Up Thunder Shot'. "The winner in this contest will receive a cash prize of Rs. 25,000 and the runners-up will be given Rs. 15,000. The third best photo will get a prize of Rs. 10,000," said Vikas Kochhar of the Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited. A three-member jury, comprising Andhra Pradesh Press Academy chairman Devulapalli Amar, K. Stevenson of the Department of Communications & Journalism in Osmania University, and Noah Seelam, a photographer with the Agence France Presse (AFP), has been constituted to evaluate the photographs. Gudivada MLA Kodali Srivenkateswara Rao (Nani) would be inaugurating the meet. For more information, contact 98495-83619.
