BIJAPUR: Vishwa Basava Dharma Mahasabha, a Bangalore-based organisation promoting Basaveshwara's philosophy of universal brotherhood, has urged the Government to ban the book "Aanu Deva Horaganavanu" by Banjegere Jayaprakash by Banjegere Jayaprakash. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, mahasabha organising secretary Dayananda Swamiji alleged that the book had hurt the feelings of those who adore Basaveshwara. It had been irresponsibly stated in the book that the 12th century social reformer was not born to a Brahmin couple but to a low-caste woman out of an illicit relationship, he alleged. The book should be banned immediately and criminal cases booked against the author and the publisher, he said. If not, an agitation would be launched across the State, he said. The swamiji said the book carried several cheap comments about almost all members of Basaveshwara's family. The author had raised doubts about the character of Basaveshwara's parents and sister. Also, the book contained damaging remarks about the fatherhood of Rashtrakavi He said that there was an urgent need to discourage such writings brought out under the guise of research.
