LEEDS: Rain at Headingley is doubly depressing since the city of Leeds lies in the Vale of York one of the driest parts of Britain. Yorkshire used to win championships because they finished more matches than their rivals particularly Lancashire from the west of England. We were told the rain that held up the start of the third day of the second Test between England and West Indies would arrive on Sunday. Sure enough, right on cue, it arrived as we set out for the ground and by the time we parked at the old practice field the drizzle was persistent. By noon it had stopped and there was an announcement that play would be possible at 1.30 but no sooner had the ECB message "if there is no more rain" hit the screen of my mobile phone than the rain began again. Finally, the entire day's play was washed out. Sarwan's replacement West Indies is also looking for a replacement for its captain Ramnaresh Sarwan who will be out for six weeks after injuring his shoulder during England's innings. The rumour immediately began that Brian Lara, who is enjoying a grand social tour of England as he says farewell to old friends, would be recalled. Recalling Lara would represent a huge step back by the board which has made the break with one of its giants and will not want to undermine whatever unity there is in the dressing room by bringing in a man who is sure to divide dressing room loyalties through no fault of his own. I understand the likely replacement is Ryan Hinds who is playing league cricket in England and so easily drafted into the side.
