MADURAI: Children with hearing and eye sight disabilities and yet posses a burning desire to complete their schooling have been provided with an opportunity by the Integrated Education Implementation Committee (IEIC), Service Centre for the Disabled. The IEIC, Madurai, has been imparting integrated free education to visually and hearing impaired along with normal children in regular schools, according to L. Shanmugam, secretary. Already there are more than 670 students being given education from Standard I to XII in the `Integrated Education for the Disabled' programme, run with support of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, he said. The institute utilises the services of 55 resource teachers, specially trained in teaching the visually and hearing impaired, who are working in 45 standard schools. Boarding and lodging facilities are provided free of cost to all children with disabilities. Students would be admitted in schools located at or near their native places, he said. Children living with parents in Madurai, Theni, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Pudukkottai, Tuticorin and Nagapattinam districts would be admitted in local schools. Hostel facility would be provided in the respective schools for them, according to a press release.
