AIADMK candidates for Rajya Sabha polls

CHENNAI: General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced that V. Maithreyan and A.Ilavarasan would be the party's nominees for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections slated for June 15.

In a statement here, she said the AIADMK parliamentary board had decided to field them. Dr. Maithreyan is the president of the AIADMK's medical wing. A consultant medical oncologist by profession, he was with the BJP from 1991 to 1999, before joining the AIADMK. In 1996, he contested for a parliamentary seat from south Chennai. He also contested the 2001 Assembly elections from Mylapore and was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2002 to 2004 when he was the deputy leader of the AIADMK MP's group.



A. Ilavarasan

He holds membership in a number of medical societies and has also served on the board of governors of educational institutions such as the IIT Madras and the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi.

Mr. Ilavarasan is the secretary of the Perambalur district unit of the party.
