Electroplating units may be shut down

Ludhiana: Nearly 400 units of the city-based electroplating industry may face closure at the hands of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) for not treating hazardous effluents in the designated Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) by May 31, the deadline set by a State committee.

``As per our assessment, about 400 electroplating units have not become the members of Ludhiana Effluent Treatment Society for getting their effluents treated in CETP,'' Ludhiana Effluent Treatment Society Chief Executive Officer Joginder Kumar said here.

Out of approximately 540 electroplating units in the city, only 137 units have come forward and became members of Ludhiana Effluent Treatment Society.

``Despite reminding several times that the units would be closed down electroplaters continue to discharge their effluent into sewerage. The response has been lukewarm,'' said Kumar. - PTI
