HYDERABAD: A metal detector installed in a cinema theatre enabled staffers arrest a second year MBBS student carrying a pistol late on Saturday night. Nineteen-year-old M. Shravan Kumar, a native of Mandamarri village in Adilabad district, had gone to Pratap theatre in Langer Houz to watch the night show. He purchased a balcony ticket and was entering the hall when the metal detector at the entrance made a beep, sending the theatre staff into a tizzy. Sensing trouble, theatre manager Laxman Rao and attender Narsing alerted police who rushed to the spot and frisked the youngster. They found a pistol snuggled in his jeans, which turned out to be a .7.6 mm licensed pistol made in Yugoslavia with 17 live rounds.
Stolen weapon
Langer Houz Inspector P. Jaipal told reporters on Sunday that the medico had stolen the weapon from the office of Asian Housing Private Limited-cum-Globe Travel Agency in Adarshnagar on May 23 along with a Rado watch and some riyals, all worth over Rs. 5 lakh. He committed the theft by breaking open the window doors. The pistol was valued at Rs. 4.5 lakh. The student came to Langer Houz area scouting for prospective buyers for the weapon. When he could not find anyone, he apparently walked into the theatre. Police inquiries revealed that Shravan was pursuing MBBS from Dalian Medical University in China. Reportedly addicted to vices, he even failed in the examination and returned home last April. He later went to his native place. After his parents reprimanded him, he returned to the city a week ago and since then was wandering around Mahatma Gandhi bus station. When he went to the Birla temple, he noticed that the window of the office was damaged and decided to commit the offence.
