This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru gave no indication of any possible change in the Government's Goa policy during a 90-minute exchange of views on the subject between him and a group of Opposition and Congress MPs in New Delhi on May 27. He reiterated that any solution of the problem could only be within the framework of the overall policy of peace. The meeting was called by the Prime Minister in response to requests by Opposition leaders to be taken into confidence with regard to the Government's policy on Goa. Among the Opposition leaders who attended the meeting were Mr. S.A. Dange, Acharya Kripalani, Mr. N.G. Goray, Prof. Hiren Mookerjee, Mr. A.K. Gopalan and Mr. Nath Pai. Mr. Nehru agreed with the Opposition contention that the restrictions put by the Government on economic transactions between Goa and the rest of India had resulted in hardships to the Goan population within and outside Goa. No definite reply was given by Mr. Nehru to the question whether the restrictions would be relaxed, but the impression carried by the participants was that the Government was considering this suggestion.
