This Day That Age
Malaya's first policewomen are now on duty in Kuala Lumpur and in other major towns. The Indian, Malay and Chinese girls have already made their first arrests and are earning a healthy respect from careless motorists who at first were inclined to scoff at them. The 54 policewomen were selected and trained by the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Miss Barbara Wentworth, an inspector loaned from Britain to the police force of Malaya. Off-duty in their barracks the girls revert to their national dress of sarong, samfoo (Chinese pyjamas) or sari. But on duty they are as smart and determined-looking as their male counterparts.
