A musical tribute to Devarajan Master

Highlight of the programme was `Shadkala pallavi,' a pet project of Devarajan.

Kozhikode: The Town Hall in Kozhikode was bathed in music last weekend. Harmony Calicut, a Kozhikode-based organisation of musicians paid a rich tribute to G. Devarajan, who gave Malayalis so many unforgettable melodies.

One of the main programmes was a singing competition that attracted over 100 participants, in junior and senior sections. "It was heartening to see so many youngsters singing different Devarajan compositions," says Leena Pappan, who was one of the judges. "The competition was especially strong in the junior section."

"Rajashilpi... ," "Chakravarthini... ," "Prayalapayodhi... ," "Ujjayiniyile gayika... ," "Arikil... ," "Sangamam... ," "Sanyasini... ," "Parijatham... " and "Innenikku... " were among the songs that were rendered at the competition. Susmitha Gireesh, P.M. Ragasudha, Sanjay Gopal, P.C. Ajay Kumar, P. Krishnendu, Arya Mohandas, Vinayak G. Krishnan and V.H. Akash were adjudged the winners. Some of them got an opportunity to sing at the show on Sunday night in which some of Devarajan's popular songs were presented by a bunch of talented singers, including Satheesh Babu, Sindhu Premkumar, Leena Pappan, Chengannur Sreekumar and Sithara Krishnakumar.

The highlight of the two-day programme was `Shadkala pallavi', which was a pet project of the master composer. It was sung by Trivandrum Krishnakumar.

Actor Murali and writers P.K. Gopi and V.R. Sudheesh were among those who spoke at the closing ceremony.
