HASSAN: It is only through the media a balance could be maintained in democracy and hence, the media should work hard to ensure it, said Kannada Sahitya Parishat State unit president Chandrashekar Patil (popularly known as Champa).

He was addressing a function, "Sneha Sambhrama", organised by Prerana Sahitya, Samskrutika Vedike and Naavu-Neevu Kalavidaru, at Chennarayapatna on Sunday.

Karnataka Patrika Academy award winner Tagadur Shivanand and vice-president of Indian Federation of Journalists Madan Gowda were felicitated.

Prof. Patil regretted that the governments are not delivering the goods to the people. Most of the elected representatives (MLAs) were keeping themselves away from the people. Hence, the media that is considered the Fourth Estate should work with social responsibility, Prof Patil added.

Earlier, MLA C.S. Putte Gowda, who inaugurated the programme, promised to construct a cultural bhavan in the name of H.D. Deve Gowda and also an Ambedkar Bhavan.

Awareness

Chairman of Kannada Book Authority S.G. Siddaramaiah said conducting such programmes in the rural areas would help create awareness about gram swaraj among the people.

Replying to the felicitations, Mr. Shivanand Tagadur, who is the Hassan District Journalist Association president, said the Patrika Bhavan in Hassan would be inaugurated in June.

Mr. Madan Gowda, Nallur Prasad, Basavaraj Nellisara, Jayaprakash Gowda also spoke.

President of Prerana Sahitya Vedike H. Sidde Gowda welcomed the gathering. Gram panchayat president M.R. Anil Kumar compered the programme. Ramu proposed a vote of thanks.
