Registration of marriage is necessary: Justice Misra

Special Correspondent

Certificates distributed to 120 couples of Porayurpet

CERTIFICATE DISTRIBUTION: Justice Prafulla Kumar Misra, Judge of the Madras High Court, distributed marriage certificates to couples in Porayurpet on Monday.

Puducherry: Madras High Court Judge and Executive Chairman of Union Territory of Puducherry Legal Services Authority (UTPLSA) Justice Prafulla Kumar Misra has said that registration of marriages is absolutely necessary and compulsory and it would enable the couples to overcome difficulties in their lives.

Distributing marriage certificates to 120 couples of Porayurpet and Solainagar at a function in Porayurpet in Villianoor Assembly constituency near here on Monday, Mr. Misra said the Legal Services Authority in Puducherry and the Women`s Commission had done a good work in enabling the couples through a special drive to have their marriages registered. The two statutory authorities had held camps in the villages recently and ensured that the residents of villages registered their marriages. Mr. Misra said that registration would be helpful as a proof of marriage whenever a dispute was taken to the court and the statutory protection was also available to the aggrieved persons.

Takes charge

Mr. Misra, who took charge of the Executive Chairman of the UTPLSA here on Sunday, said that the Authority and Women's Commission here would hold special camps in all the villages to ensure that marriage registration was done by the targeted groups. He also appealed to the villagers who had now benefited from the drive to spread the message about registration among their relatives and friends in their villages and in their neighbourhood.

District Judge and Member-Secretary of the UTPLSA D. Ramabathiran, said the Supreme Court in February 2006 had said that marriage registration was absolutely necessary to ensure social security and also asked all the States and Union Territories to bring in necessary amendments to the legislations relating to marriage. He said the UTPLSA had taken upon itself in collaboration with the Women`s Commission to reach out to the poor and illiterate villagers to ensure that they registered the marriages. The drive would continue and the Authority will go to the remotest villages as part of its efforts to provide social security.
