Rishabh, Sudheera clinch under-12 titles

HYDERABAD: R. Rishabh Yadav won the boys under-12 singles title defeating S. Ankit in the final of the Twin Cities Open tennis tournament at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here on Monday.

Playing aggressively from the word go, Rishabh, a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya (Picket) came up with big points when it mattered most to notch up a 5-2 win over Ankit.

P. Sudheera clinched the girls under-12 title getting the better of D. Snikha 5-1 with a near flawless game.

Other results: Boys: U-12: Doubles: D.S.R. Sashank & Afan Abdul Ahad bt Yashpuri & Rishabh Kumar Yadav 7-6(5).

U-14: N. Sherwin bt S. Ankit 5-3.

The Hindu triumphs

The Hindu recorded an eight-wicket win over Varta in the final of the Avon-SBH print media cricket tournament, organised by Maheshwari Cultural Club, here.

Sudhir of The Hindu was named player of the final for his three-wicket haul and a breezy unbeaten 23 including three fours.

The scores: Varta 87 in 19.2 overs lost to The Hindu 90 for two in 11.4 overs.

U-13 football

Twelve teams have confirmed participation in the Sachdev Sports under-13 inter-coaching centres football tournament, to be organised by Shastri Soccer Club at Trimulgherry Village Grounds from June 2. The event will be a league-cum-knock-out affair.

The teams: Trimulgherry, Gandhinagar, Gymkhana, Bolarum, J.J. Nagar, Kamal Nagar, Ramakrishnapuram, Central Battery, Venkatapuram, V.V. Nagar, James XI and Friends United Club.

Pragna adjudged best

N. Pragna of Andhra Pradesh was adjudged best player from the State in the 34th National `B' women's chess championship, which concluded at Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy Indoor Stadium here, according to Maj. K.A. Shiva Prasad, President of AP Chess Association. He said 10 other players from the State — V. Sreelakshmi, Anusha, Kanuri Tejaswi, V. Chaitanya, S. Tejaswini Reddy, Y.G. Sriharika, V. Bhavana, Ch. Sahajasri and G. Sandhya — were also given special prizes. M. Janaki Devi got the best veteran prize and M. Bansi Prathima for being the youngest participant.

Prathima was also given a cash incentive of Rs.1500 at the valedictory function.

Gymkhana `B' posts win

Gymkhana `B' Football Club scored a 2-0 win over All Stars (TVG) in the Gotla Cup football tournament at the Gymkhana Grounds here on Monday. The goals were scored by Namid and Anil Kumar. In another match a brace by Nithar helped Lal Bahadur Stadium FC beat Valerian Grammar School 2-0.

Vamshi hits double century

A double century by Vamshi Vardhan Reddy (202 not out) helped Hindi Maha Vidyalaya record a thumping, 216-run win over M.L. Jaisimha Academy in the all-India Pepsi Cup sub-juniors cricket tournament in Bangalore, according to information received here.

The scores: Hindi Maha Vidyalaya CA 309 for two (Vamshi Vardhan Reddy 202 n.o.) bt ML Jaisimha Academy 93.

Zainab advances

Hyderabad's Zainab Ali Sajjad celebrated her birthday in style when she defeated seventh-seeded Ravina Shetty of Bangalore 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the girls' under-14 singles of the Asian junior ranking tennis tournament in Pune on Monday, according to reports received here.

Sabatini stuns Manaswini

Rank outsider Sabatini Ankaraju was stretched but ousted eighth seed M. Manaswini 2-4, 4-1, 4-0 in the AITA Talent series junior tennis tournament girls' under-14 singles match at the Gymkhana Grounds courts here on Monday.

Hockey trials

The Hyderabad Hockey Association (HHA) will conduct trials-cum-coaching camp at the Begumpet Stadium on Tuesday from 6.30 a.m.

The State teams for the junior Nationals at Chennai will be picked during the trials. Players born on or after January 1, 1998 must report to Jude Absolom, at the venue at the given time.
