Chennai: Karanatka dethroned Tamil Nadu from the pedestal as champion in the men's section of the St. Joseph's senior National ball badminton championships at the Sports Village in St. Joseph's College of Engineering here on Monday. After succumbing to the consistent attack of Tamil Nadu in the first game, Karnataka recovered mainly through the excellent display of skipper Venkataramu. Karnataka won 13-29, 29-18, 29-25. Earlier, profiting from the experience and expertise of Mary Smitha, Kerala retained the women's title with a convincing 29-14, 29-15 victory. "The key element was team work," Smitha, captain of the team said after the final. Smitha has been representing Kerala in the championships for the last 12 years and has been the captain for the last eight years. Playing right front, she was sharp and accurate in her drops. The results: Men: Final: Karnataka bt Tamil Nadu 13-29, 29-18, 29-25. Semifinals: Tamil Nadu bt Andhra 29-12, 29-20; Karnataka bt Hyderabad 29-15, 29-18. Women: Kerala bt Karnataka 29-14, 29-15.
