DHAKA : "You are a champion.'' Ravi Shastri put things in perspective when he hailed Anil Kumble and his achievements. The occasion was Shastri's birthday celebration on Sunday that coincided with the Indian team's win over Bangladesh. Shastri was overwhelmed by the response from the team to his suggestion that they raise their game. The team took just three days to finish the job and wrap up the series against Bangladesh 1-0 after the draw at Chittagong when rain came to the rescue of the home team. Shastri recalled the first tour that Kumble made with the Indian team in 1990. "We were playing in Sharjah and he was my room partner. I saw him then and I am seeing him now. The intensity is same and his commitment has not taken a dip. "I know there are some more seniors here with great achievements but Kumble is special. He brings dignity to his job and is a superb role model. Hats off Jumbo,'' said Shastri to the delight of the audience. Kumble responded with equal warmth. "I know why Ravi selected me on this occasions. It is his day. We admired him as a player and he has done an excellent job as a coach. I think he is the champion. "In 1985 I remember watching on television his exploits in Australia when he was declared the champion of champions. I always liked the way he played his cricket. My best wishes to him,'' said the soft-spoken leg-spinner, who was feted for having crossed the 550-wicket mark in Test cricket. The private dinner was attended by the entire team with the exception of Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik. Special Correspondent
