Court declines early hearing

Legal Correspondent

Dera counsel refers to ultimatum

New Delhi: Observing that there was no urgency, the Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a petition for a direction to State Governments to take steps to protect the life, liberty and property of the Dera followers.

On May 25, a vacation Bench consisting of Justices Arijit Pasayat and D.K. Jain posted this petition for hearing on June 4.

However, V.K. Ohri, counsel for Dera, made a mention again on Monday for early hearing on the ground that the May 27 deadline to vacate the Dera premises was over.

When the Bench wanted to know whether there was a challenge to a government order in this regard, the counsel said Akal Takht, and not the Government, had given the ultimatum.

The Bench said: "They [Akal Takht] are not Government" and declined the plea for early hearing.

The petition was filed by Abhijit Bhagat, a trustee and Vice-Chairman of the Dera, Sirsa in Haryana; Gurdas Singh of Rajasthan and Ombir Singh of Meerut.
