Dera sends apology to SGPC

Sirsa (Haryana): The Dera Sacha Sauda, which is in confrontation with the Sikh clergy, late on Monday night sent its apology to Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), brightening chances of an end to the standoff.

Issued on Sunday night, the statement, containing an apology from Dera head Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh for dressing like Guru Gobind Singh, was faxed to the SGPC office in Amritsar, SGPC sources said.

Signed statement

The signed statement would be handed over to the Akal Takht, the supreme spiritual and temporal body of Sikhs, which meets in Amritsar on Tuesday to discuss the apology.

The Takht, comprising the five high priests of Sikhs, issued an edict demanding closure of all centres of the Dera in Punjab by May 27, accusing Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of committing blasphemy. In his apology, the Dera head said he had no intention of imitating Guru Gobind Singh. — PTI
