ANANTAPUR: The revenue officials with the help of police launched an operation to remove lands occupied by the poor at about six places in and around the district headquarters town on Monday. While the poor led by CPI and CPI (M) erected temporary shelters at five places they were living for the last four years in Rahul Gandhi Colony and Savitramma Kottala. Removal of structures built by the poor on a private land now known as Rahul Gandhi Colony and Savitramma Kottala was taken up with the help of bulldozers and other earthmovers. In other sites, the police and revenue officials removed the encroachments manually as there were no structures except temporary shelters. The cries of the dwellers rented the air as the revenue and police officials got down to razing the structures. In all, about 200 activists of CPI and CPI (M) were arrested by the police as their tried to obstruct the officials' efforts of eviction in occupied lands. The temporary shelters raised by the poor led by CPI near Samatagram and near Oilfed, Ganga Nagar, Syndicate Nagar and at the intersection of NH-7 and NH-205 were cleared by the police and revenue officials physically. The arrested Left parties' activists along with a few poor were taken to different police stations.
