Six panchaloha

idols unearthed

THANJAVUR: Six panchaloha idols belonging to Chola period were unearthed on the northern corridor of the Iravatheswarar temple at Darasuram near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district on Monday when the Archaeological Survey of India personnel was engaged in conservation work. The ASI sources said out of the six idols, five were the images of Parvathi (three in standing and two in sitting postures). — Special Correspondent

NMR services suspended

Coimbatore: The Nilgiris Mountain Railway service between Mettuppalayam and Udhagamandalam is suspended till May 30, according to a release from the Southern Railway.

Owing to a landslip between Hillgrove and Coonoor stations on the Mettuppalayam - Coonoor section on Sunday following the heavy rainfall, large boulders had rolled on to the track. About 15 metres of embankment had been completely washed away in the flash floods.

Consequently, the train service from Mettuppalayam was cancelled on May 28 (Monday). Passengers who boarded the morning services were sent to Udhagamandalam by three special buses. — Staff Reporter

One more accused held

MADURAI: The Special Crimes Branch team of the Central Bureau of Investigation, probing the Dinakaran newspaper office attack case, on Monday arrested the tenth accused here. According to police sources, I. Ruben (24) of K. Pudur, was remanded to custody. The police have already arrested nine persons, including the prime suspect, `Attack' Pandi. — Special Correspondent

Mango festival from June 7

Krishnagiri: The 15th all India mango festival will be held from June 7 to 26 in Krishnagiri.

A competition to judge the best mango would also be held, said Collector Santhosh Babu here on Monday. Mango farmers and pulp producers from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra will participate. — Staff Reporter

Three die in accident

PUDUKOTTAI: Three persons were killed when the car they were travelling in from Tiruchi to Velankanni hit a tree at Mandhakudi near Alankudi on Monday. The police identified the dead as Mary Grazy (65) Jeniffa (6) and Sahaya Mary (32) of Lalgudi in Tiruchi district.

Tourist killed

THANJAVUR: Kannan, a middle-aged man from Chennai, was killed and a few others sustained minor injuries when the tourist bus in which they were travelling from Thanjavur to Tiruchi dashed against a tree near Pudukudi in the district on Monday.

According to police sources, the accident occurred when the driver of the bus reportedly veered the vehicle suddebly to avoid hitting a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 74.43 feet against the full level of 120 feet on Monday.

The inflow was 929 cusecs and the discharge, 1,500 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Heavy rain

Nagercoil : Heavy rain lashed various parts of kanyakumari district on Monday. It brought cheer among farmers, as they could undertake ploughing.

However, the sky remained overcast throughout the day. Fishermen belonging to Kurmpanai, Vaniyakudi, Simon Colony, Kottilpadu, Mondaicadu and Manavalakuruchi did not venture into sea, owing to rough weather.

The compound wall of an ice company at Kurumpanai was damaged.

The maximum rainfall of 150.4 mm was recorded at Perunchani followed by 150 at Puthen dam, 62 in Pechipparai, 58.1 in Boothapandi, 55.8 in Myladi, 53.5 in Nagercoil, 48.2 in Aralvoimozhi, 32.6 in Kannimar, 27.4 in Kottaram, 22.5 in Surulode, 3.8 in Chittar I and 3 mm in Chittar II.

Water level

Nagercoil : The water level in Pechipparai dam stood at 25.70 feet against the total capacity of 48 feet, 26.35 feet in Perunchani against the total capacity of 77 feet, 2.30 feet in Chittar I against the total capacity of 18 feet and 2.39 feet in Chittar II against the total capacity of 18 feet.

Conference

Tuticorin : A conference on `water resources and riverbed protection' organised by People's Watch, a non-governmental organisation, at Kulathur near here on Sunday, discussed methods to prevent illegal sand mining in the Vaippar.

A resolution passed in the meeting urged the Collector to ensure constant supply of drinking water to residents off Vaippar basin. Elected representatives and technocrats attended the conference.

Delegation visits port

Tuticorin: A foreign delegation comprising officials from Halifax Port Authority in Canada held talks with Tuticorin Port Trust officials recently to explore possibilities of developing trade between Port of Halifax and Tuticorin Port.

A. Subbiah, Deputy Chairman, Tuticorin Port Trust, explained the facilities, traffic performance and future projects of the port here to the members.

He briefed them on the close cooperation among various stakeholders of the port and highlighted rail and road connectivity to the port. The delegation was taken on a familiarisation trip to help them understand the facilities at the port.

Development

ERODE: Erode Government Headquarters Hospital would be developed with public contribution and the hospital would be made a model one, said the District Collector T. Udhaychandran, on Saturday, when he was visiting the Erode Government Headquarters Hospital.

The Collector visited all the wards and gave instructions to the Joint Director of Medicals (in-charge) K. Nagarajan and the Medical Superintendent K.K.A. Hussain Ali.

The Collector told presspersons that a patients' welfare committee had already been formed and it was decided to collect donations from philanthropic persons and use the funds for the Government Headquarters Hospital.

The Collector stated that with public contribution, a dialysis unit, a scanner for examining the cardiology cases and a mammogram to test cancer patients, besides some other equipment would be purchased and used in the hospital.

Nominal charges would be collected from the people for such instrument usage.

The Collector wanted the public to contribute their share to the Patients Welfare Committee and obtain receipts.

Strike

ERODE: Sixty sanitary workers doing road cleaning and other works observed a stay-in strike inside the Surampatty Grade Three Municipal Office on Monday.

According to police, nine of the workers were asked to operate the water supply systems.

A private individual is said to have verbally abused a worker engaged in opening a valve in one of the wards.

Police gave an assurance that action would be taken against the person responsible and workers withdrew their strike.
