Sarpanch hacked to death

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: Chebrolu sarpanch Vasireddy Srimanthu of the Congress was hacked to death in broad daylight by suspected political rivals on the Guntur-Bapatla-Chirala (GBC) road near Chebrolu on Monday morning.

Police suspect the involvement of Sk. Saida, who was a strong contender for the sarpanch post in the last panchayat elections. However, no arrests have been made so far. According to the Tsunduru Circle Inspector of Police, M.V. Rama Rao, Srimanthu was on the way to his office at about 10 a.m. on a motorcycle from Guntur when a gang of four persons following him in a Sumo, rammed into his bike from the rear. Seeing danger, Saida tried to flee.

Bomb hurled

However, the assailants hurled a country-made bomb at Srimanthu, overpowered him and hacked to death. Soon after the incident, a large crowd gathered at the spot. Police parties from Tenali rural police station rushed to the scene of the offence and shifted the body to the Government General Hospital here.
