Naidu accuses Government of creating rift among people of different districts

Tirupati: Telugu Desam president N.Chandrababu Naidu on Monday accused the YSR Government of creating a rift among people of different districts and regions by adopting a "lopsided" irrigation plan and demanded a comprehensive water policy.

He also declared that the TDP would intensify the agitation seeking a halt to the controversial Babli project by Maharashtra and organise dharnas in all the mandals falling under Sriramsagar project next month. Mr.Naidu was addressing delegates at the silver jubilee Mahanadu during a discussion on the resolutions relating to the irrigation sector and the Babli project.

Rehabilitation package

Mr.Naidu urged the Government not to create confusion among people but to come out with an irrigation policy, which would be acceptable to all. He also wanted a proper rehabilitation package for people displaced by projects. He charged the Government with compromising the State's interests by giving an undertaking before the Brajesh Kumar Tribunal that surplus waters in Krishna basin would not be utilised.

Alleging that the Congress Government was indulging in "dhanayagnam" in the name of "jalayagnam", he said that not a single project was completed.

Earlier, former Ministers Kadiyam Srihari and K.E.Krishnamurthy demanded that the Godavari waters be utilised first for completing the projects in Telangana before diverting to other areas.

Later, resolutions were adopted. The resolution on Babli project wanted a high-level technical committee to be appointed by the Centre and an assurance that the works would be stopped pending the committee's report.

Another resolution on agriculture alleged that six farmers were committing suicide in the country daily since the UPA Government assumed office and 50 per cent of these were in the State.
