Heritage India Foundation chairman Vijay Goel along with his wife presenting a copy of his book "Delhi -- the Emperor's city -- Rediscovering Chandni Chowk and its Environs" to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in the Capital on Monday.
NEW DELHI: Heritage India Foundation chairman Vijay Goel on Monday urged President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam to direct the Union Government to make efforts for securing World Heritage Centre status for Chandni Chowk here. A memorandum submitted to the President by a delegation led by the former Union Minister urged Dr. Kalam to direct the Centre to set up a memorial and a museum outside Delhi's Red Fort to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first freedom struggle of 1857. The delegation also requested the President to direct the Centre to set up a Walled City Development Board for coordinating the activities of various government agencies to prepare the citation for declaring Chandni Chowk a World Heritage centre. Mr. Goel also presented a copy of his book, "Delhi -- the Emperor's city -- Rediscovering Chandni Chowk and its Environs", to the President. In the 176-page book, Mr. Goel has tried to bring to light lesser known facts about Purani Dilli. The book also contains photographs depicting the great moments of the 1857 struggle. Appreciating the book, Dr. Kalam said each of its pages was steeped in history.
