Police bust highway robber gang

  • Besides cash, a motorcycle and a cell phone recovered
  • Some 20 youths of Kapparalathippa involved in the racket

    ONGOLE: Police here today busted a gang involved in highway robberies by arresting three youth and recovering from them Rs. 93,000 in cash, a motorcycle and a cell phone.

    A police investigation revealed that about 20 youth belonging to Kapparalathippa village in Nellore district are involved in the racket. Three of them form a team, hire a motorcycle and start their operation at midnight. While some teams go towards Chennai, other teams go towards Vijayawada scouting for vehicles parked on the highway for rest.

    Modus operandi

    They commit theft of articles from the vehicle without disturbing the driver and other occupants taking rest in the vehicle.

    They open the boot and decamp with valuables like suitcases, cash, gold ornaments, cell phones etc.

    After completing their operation at 3 a.m., they return to their base on motorcycles. Interestingly, they hire motorcycles at Rs. 500 per day for their operation.

    Police received complaints that the gangs robbed D Bhaskara Reddy, a contractor taking rest in his vehicle of Rs. 80,000 in cash and cell phone and a suitcase on May 17. They also robbed one S. Venkata Reddy while he was resting in his car on the highway at Thettu and stole Rs. 20,000 in cash and a cell phone from the vehicle.

    Police suspected the hand of Kapparalathippa gangs in the robberies.

    On a tip-off, they arrested one M. Baburao and G. Anilkumar near Autonagar here when they were returning from Medarametla after their operation and recovered a motorcycle and cell phone from them.

    Police also recovered Rs. 93,000 they had deposited in their bank account.

    Their accomplice, Ramesh is at large.
