Leaders, party workers vow to follow the ideals of NTR

VIJAYAWADA: The urban and district units of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) paid rich tributes to former chief minister and party founder N.T. Rama Rao on his 85th birth anniversary on Monday.

Meetings and get-togethers were organised at the TDP urban office in the city, with the leaders garlanding a portrait of the late NTR. The leaders heaped encomiums on their founder, saying NTR's contribution to improve the lot of the poor in the State was memorable.

Sweets distributed

TDP senior leader Tumati Premnath, urban unit treasurer Buddha Venkanna, city leader Khaleel and others led a number of cadre and followers in paying tributes to the leader at his statue at NTR Circle in Patamata early in the day. "Ksheerabhishekam" (cleaning with milk) was done to the statue and the leaders garlanded it.

A formal ceremony was organised and later sweets were distributed to passers-by and also onlookers who gathered at the statue.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Premnath and Mr. Venkanna said that the TDP under the leadership of Nara Chandrababu Naidu was continuing the legacy of NTR at all levels and the party would remain committed to helping the poor.

They felt that the unique achievement of NTR was that he had shaken the roots of the Congress in the State and went on to challenge its authority at the national level too.

The TDP leaders vowed to live up to the ideals of NTR and follow in his footsteps to fight with the Congress both in the State and at the Centre. They said during his lifetime, NTR always thought of improving the living standards of the poor by launching such schemes as rice for Rs. 2 a kg and other programmes.
