BANGALORE: The southwest monsoon will enter south Karnataka either on May 29 or 30 and cover the rest of the State by July 4, according to the Karnataka Drought Monitoring Cell. The monsoon would be "normal to above normal" in intensity in the State, said V.S. Prakash, Director of the Cell, in a lecture on "Monsoon Prospects 2007" here on Monday. "In June, many coastal districts of Karnataka will receive rains that are well above normal. In July, the districts of Bidar, Gulbarga, Raichur, Kolar and Bangalore Urban and Rural could receive subnormal rainfall," he said. Over 820 mm of rainfall is expected this monsoon in the State, which was more than the average record of 805 mm, said M.B. Rajegowda, Professor, Agrometeorology, University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS). The onset of the southwest monsoon in South Karnataka is expected on June 5, covering the rest of the State within five days. The Indian Meteorological Department had predicted that the monsoon would arrive a week earlier on the Kerala coast this year. "The monsoon front that had become stationary over the Andaman and Nicobar islands over the last 10 days, has picked up again", said Dr. Prakash.
