Jagathy acquitted

KOTTAYAM: Jagathy Sreekumar, actor, and another accused in the Vithura sex-scandal case were acquitted by a special court here on Monday. Mr. Sreekumar, first accused, was given the benefit of doubt. Passing the judgment, P.K. Baburaj, judge, said the prosecution could not prove that the accused had sexually harassed the victim. Nor was the role of the second accused, Sindhu, alias Shobhana, of Nilamel Colony, Vilappilsala, near Thiruvananthapuram, proved. — Staff Reporter

Monsoon: control rooms opened

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government has opened round-the-clock control rooms at the State, district and taluk levels to monitor the monsoon situation. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran directed District Collectors to take adequate steps to minimise monsoon havoc.

`Praveshanotsavam'

Kozhikode: Minister for Education M.A. Baby will inaugurate the State-level school `praveshanotsavam' at Azhichavattom Government Lower Primary School here at 10 a.m. on June 4. A committee comprising A. Pradeepkumar, MLA, as chairman and Deputy Director of Education as convener was constituted for the purpose on Monday. — Staff Reporter

Lawyer removed from State roll

Kochi: The Disciplinary Committee of the Bar Council of Kerala on Monday ordered removal of B. Ajayaghosh, a lawyer practising in courts at Changanassery, off the State roll of the Bar Council on charges of professional misconduct.

Sudhakaran contempt case

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) S. Soman will decide on May 31 whether or not to refer the contempt of court case against Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran to the Kerala High Court. One Muttada Balachandran had filed a petition before the CJM accusing the Minister of making contemptuous comments against magistrates as a whole. Mr. Balachandran had submitted news reports to corroborate his charge. Cherinniyoor Sasidharan Nair, the Minister's counsel, told the court that the Minister was innocent of any contempt of the judiciary. — Staff Reporter

More members on debt relief panel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two more members would be appointed to the Agriculture Debt Relief Commission to improve its functioning and increase the representation of farmers, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has said. The Minister said in a release that the Commission had powers to write off even non-agricultural loans. Application forms for applying for relief from the Commission would be made available at Collectorates and offices of Principal Agricultural Officers.

Final re-allotment for PG medical courses

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The final re-allotment of seats for PG medical courses - 2007 will be published on the web site http://cee.kerala.gov.in/pgmedicalresult at 10 p.m. on May 29. A press note issued by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations here on Monday said candidates can rearrange/cancel their higher order option at this web site from 8 p.m. on May 28 to 8 p.m. on May 29. On May 30 and till 5 p.m. on May 31, candidates who have been newly allotted PG (degree/diploma) seats should join the respective colleges and remit the fee/balance fee at the colleges itself. Admissions will close on May 31, the press note added. — Staff Reporter

Human rights seminar today

ALAPPUZHA: The State Human Rights Commission is organising a seminar on human rights awareness on Tuesday at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School near the Municipal Town Hall here. The seminar, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., primarily aims at creating awareness on human rights among employees of local bodies and voluntary organisations. Minister for Law M. Vijayakumar will inaugurate the seminar. — Staff Reporter

`Veenapoovu' fete

PALAKKAD: Avishkara, a cultural organisation of women founded in 1996, with a view to promoting fine arts and creating awareness, is organising a dance programme `Nritha Sandhya' to celebrate the birth centenary of `Veenapoovu,' by Mahakavi Kumaranasan.

The programme will be presented at C.S.N. Auditorium, Ottapalam, on May 30. — Staff Reporter
