No review of compulsory helmet rule
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI
: There is no review of the `compulsory helmet' rule for children and pillion-riders, Transport Commissioner C. P. Singh has said.
When contacted on Monday over reports in a section of media, Mr. Singh said the `compulsory helmet' rule was made under the Motor Vehicles Act and no review was possible.
The Government Order issued on February 22 categorically stated: "All two-wheeler drivers and pillion-riders shall compulsorily wear helmets." Mr.Singh appealed to motorists in the city to strictly follow the rule from June 1. Asked if all pillion-riders must wear helmet or children would be exempted, Mr.Singh said that only the infants carried by pillion-riders were exempted.
