CHENNAI: The Janata Party on Monday reacted strongly to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's announcement on reservation for minorities. In a statement, party president Subramanian Swamy said Muslims and Christians were not entitled to any reservation because they were the ruling classes for a thousand years. Reservation was meant only for those classes on whom society had imposed cultural and social disabilities for long. Only Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and that too the non-creamy layer, were entitled to reservation. All other classes could demand a world-class primary and secondary educational system to empower and enable them to compete but not reservation. If any person was too poor to afford a good education, that person should get a Government scholarship. He said Mr. Karunanidhi's move was fraught with dangerous consequences for the integrity of the nation. Stating that he would challenge it in court, Dr. Swamy said Mr. Karunanidhi should not play cheap politics with the future of the country.
