Oscar Bansal upset

Chennai: Tamil Nadu's M.R. Manikandan caused the day's lone upset, beating fifth seed Oscar Bansal of Chandigarh 21-14, 21-14 in the first round of the boys' under-19 event in the Smt. Krishna Khaitan memorial all-India junior badminton tournament, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, on Tuesday.

Saurabh through

Fourth seed Saurabh Varma of Madhya Pradesh just about sneaked past AP's Vijay Kumar Reddy 20-22, 16-21, 21-19.

The four seeds in the girls' under-19 singles event were given first-round byes.

Bansal's shots flew past the lines consistently, with the fifth seed struggling to control the rallies. Manikandan attacked with more purpose and accuracy, and sufficiently changed pace and angle to create trouble.

In the girls' under-16 first round, P. Lavanya of AP beat Khatua Aindrila of West Bengal 24-20, 20-22, 21-16.
