Special Correspondent
Puducherry: The Department of Health has evolved a health insurance scheme to provide financial assistance to those belonging to the "below poverty line" (BPL) categories in Mahe and Yanam regions, and suffering from critical ailments. Health Minister E. Valsaraj told newsmen here on Tuesday that the scheme would be operated by insurance companies associating important corporate hospitals outside the Union Territory. The Government would soon select the companies to operate the scheme, and a meeting would be held in this regard on Wednesday.
Rs.2.5 lakh
He said that each of the persons identified to be suffering from critical ailments would be extended an insurance cover of Rs.2.5 lakh. The administration had prepared a list of patients belonging to the BPL families. Mr Valsaraj said that since Yanam region did not have both specialty and super specialty hospitals, the Government had resorted to the health insurance scheme. Mahe had no super specialty and that was the reason for taking up the Mahe region under the scheme. He said that the insurance scheme would be launched shortly in Yanam when President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam visits the region during the second week of June.
