IT exports from A.P. hit a new high

State crosses Rs. 18,000-crore milestone

HYDERABAD: Continuing its robust growth in the Information Technology sector, the State registered software exports worth Rs. 18,582 crore ( $ 4.5 billion) during 2006-07, marking 48 per cent increase over the previous year's Rs. 12,521 crore.

More than 170 companies, including 32 with foreign equity, started their operations in the State during the year with an estimated Rs. 1,900 crore-investment. The employment in the registered units went up by more than 35,000 from 1.51 lakh to 1.87 lakh during the year.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Software Technology Parks of India (Hyderabad) director E. Manoj Kumar said Andhra Pradesh stood fourth in the country contributing 14 per cent in the national software exports of Rs. 1.34 lakh crore. Karnataka with estimated Rs. 48,000 crore-exports continued to be in the first place followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

Software exports, constituting 53 per cent of the State's total exports, were expected to grow by 35 to 40 per cent during the current year and cross US $ 6 billion (over Rs. 25,000 crore) mark. Of the total units, five companies contributed exports of over Rs. 1,000 crore, three companies between Rs. 500 crore and Rs. 1,000 crore and 24 firms Rs. 100 crore to Rs. 500 crore.

Major destination

United States continued to be the major destination with 66 per cent share of exports, while exports to Europe and Asia Pacific countries also showed an increase. There had been an increased IT activity in the tier-II cities like Kakinada. Efforts were under way to address issues in the human development area.
