GUNTUR: Tense situation continued to prevail in Chebrolu village, a day after Congress Sarpanch Vasireddy Srimanthu was hacked to death by his political rivals in broad daylight near Narakoduru on the GBC Road. Normal life was affected and the shops remained closed on Tuesday. A police picket was put up in the village centre as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, the public representatives in the district were seething with anger and aghast at the manner in which the assassins escaped after killing the sarpanch. "The police station was just half a km from the scene of offence. Had the policemen acted on time they would have apprehended the killer,'' Tenali Member of Parliament V. Balashourie opined. Two constables, including the station writer, who were on their motorcycle, noticed the jeep, but failed to alert the inspector, he alleged. The police under fire from political quarters got a minor relief, when the Tata Sierra jeep used by the killers, was found abandoned at the Indira Priyadarshini Colony. Superintendent of Police B. Shivadhara Reddy said that jeep belonged to Sk. Saida. He said the police had also identified other assassins and exuded confidence that the killers would be apprehended within a short time.
