VIJAYAWADA: The resolutions passed by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) at its Mahanadu in Tirupati are premature and presumptuous, according to Congress leaders here. Minister for Animal Husbandry Mandali Buddha Prasad, MLAs -- Chanumolu Venkata Rao (Mylavaram) and Devineni Rajasekhar (Kankipadu) -- and Zilla Parishad Chairman Kukkala Nageswara Rao said at a press conference here on Tuesday that TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu was trying to `trick' people into thinking that his party was concerned about the welfare of farmers and development of civic bodies. Mr. Buddha Prasad said Mr. Naidu, who once showcased development in information technology and the Hitec City in Hyderabad as future prospects of the State, made a volte-face at Mahanadu by posing for photographs in the attire of a farmer and a shepherd. Lacking a clear picture of how to strengthen the economy of the State, the TDP leaders were talking of taking the advice of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen and even the Communist parties, Mr. Prasad ridiculed. He said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the Congress had a clear perspective from the beginning that agriculture would be the growth engine of the State's economy. For this very reason, development in farm sector were showcased when U.S. President George Bush came to visit Hyderabad.
Powers to local bodies
Mr. Buddha Prasad termed the resolution passed at Mahanadu promising all powers to the local bodies `presumptuous'. He wondered why Mr. Naidu had not given local bodies all the powers during his nine-year rule. On the other hand, the TDP passing no resolution on irrigation had clearly showed that none in the party had the slightest idea of the significance of irrigation projects. The party had failed to take any stance on the Pothireddypadu issue, he pointed out. Mr. Prasad asserted that the TDP had failed in its role of an Opposition party.
