Eviction evokes mixed response

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Eviction of encroachers across the State has evoked mixed response from the public. The eviction drive in Munnar was welcomed by the CPI(ML) Red Flag. M.S.Jayakumar, central committee secretary of the party, alleged that Right wing activists were keen to sabotage the eviction process started by the Left Government.

According to the Indian Federal Democratic Party, instead of demolishing the illegal structures, the Government should have taken them over. Its leader P. George said none would benefit from the demolition. In places such as Munnar, tourism infrastructure was inadequate. When the State was trying to promote tourism, doing away with facilities would not help, he said.

Traders in Kochi voiced protest against the method of demolition. Most of the traders here belonged to the small and medium sectors and any action to weaken their position would benefit the multinational operators, they said.
