PARIS: Andy Roddick's miserable relationship with the French Open continued on Tuesday when the third seed crashed out in the first round for the fourth time in seven Roland Garros visits.

The American saw his 2007 Paris bid ended by Russia's Igor Andreev who won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

While Andreev goes on to face either Luis Horna of Peru or Nicolas Massu of Chile for a place in the third round, Roddick was left to concentrate on the grass court season, a more suitable home for his big-serving game.

Andreev was rewarded for his attacking instincts in a match where he hit an astonishing 66 winners to the American's 19.

Earlier, Roger Federer beat Michael Russell of the United States 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in a match that started a day earlier.

Federer led 6-4, 4-1 before rain halted play on Monday. The top-ranked Swiss star returned to centre court with sun breaking through the clouds and quickly earned his spot in the second round.

"Winning in three sets, it's the perfect beginning," Federer said. "Over two days, it's always difficult, with the wind and the changing conditions compared to yesterday. And I didn't know this opponent. I'm really happy."

Federer didn't face a break point, winning 78 percent of points on his serve.

"I served well," said Federer, a 10-time Grand Slam champion.

Guillermo Canas reached the second round by defeating Victor Hanescu of Romania 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.

Monfils survives

Gael Monfils of France was taken the distance by Olivier Rochus of Belgium before coming through 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Monfils is coming into the tournament having reached the final of the Hypo Group International in Poertschach, Austria last week.

Lleyton Hewitt kept up his proud record of never having lost a French Open first round match in eight visits when he beat former doubles partner Max Mirnyi of Belarus 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.

In the women's event, Jelena Jankovic advanced by beating Stephanie Foretz of France 6-2, 6-2.

Also, No. 6 Nicole Vaidisova beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland 6-4, 6-3 and 2004 runner-up Elena Dementieva defeated Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 6-2.
