Vaibhav Suri, Dhara Gupta triumph

NEW DELHI: Vaibhav Suri of Raghubir Singh Junior Modern School defeated World under-9 silver-medallist Prince Bajaj in the fifth and final round to claim the Delhi (under-17) title at the Amity International School, Saket, here.

Vaibhav and Hemant Sharma tied at 4.5 points but the former was awarded the title on superior tiebreak score. Among the girls, Dhara Gupta scored 3.5 points from four rounds.

The results: Open under-17 (fifth round): Vaibhav Suri (4.5) bt Prince Bajaj (3.5); Hemant Sharma (4.5) bt Sandeep Singh (3); Rishabh Jain (4) bt Anirudh Singh Negi (3); Vaibhav Khanna (4) bt Jhujhar Singh (2.5); Jotish Roy (3) drew with Harshal Shahi (3); Ankit Mittal (2) lost to Hitesh Marwah (3); Gautam (3) bt Sarthak Mahajan (2); Hemant Tewatia (2.5) drew with Madhav Malhotra ( 2.5); Rahul Pratap Singh (2.5) drew with Parth Bhatia (2); Yogesh Rawat (2.5) bt Swayam Bhatia (2); Kunal Bhattacharya (1) lost to Sidharth Narayan (2); Prince Sareen (1.5) bt Pranav Bassi (0).

Final standing: 1-2. Vaibhav Suri and Hemant Sharma, 3-4. Vaibhav Khanna and Rishabh Jain, 5. Prince Bajaj, 6-11.. Anirudh Singh Negi, Sandeep Singh, Harshal Shahi, Gautam, Jotish Roy and Hitesh Marwah.

Girls under-17: Kanika Saxena (3) drew with Dhara Gupta (4); R.Mathurapriya (2) lost to Nupur Suri (3); Upasana Mahajan (2.5) drew with R.Mathuravani (2.5); Soma Samantarai (1) lost to K. Sushmita (2.5); Soumya Gera (1) lost to Mahima Kohli (2); Sharmeen K. Khurana (1) bye.
